The God Theory- Universes, Zero-point Fields, And What's Behind It All

Cover of ISBN 1578633745The God Theory
Universes, Zero-point Fields, And What's Behind It All:
Book by Bernard Haisch. Red Wheel/Weiser 157 pages Hardcover Published 2006-05-01. Description: Is it possible for there to be a purpose in a Universe born in a Big Bang and filled with evolving life? Can the multiverse and superstring theories of cosmology be rendered consistent with an infinite intelligence? Might our human consciousness transcend physical matter? Is our existence and the life we live the means whereby God experiences God's own potential?

A remarkable discovery has gradually emerged in astrophysics over the past two decades and is now essentially undisputed: that certain key physical constants have just the right values to make life possible. Most scientists prefer to explain away this uniqueness, by claiming that a huge, perhaps infinite, number of universes must therefore exist, each with unique properties, each randomly different from the other, with ours only seemingly special because in a universe with different properties we would never have originated.

Haisch proposes the alternative that the special properties of our Universe reflect an underlying intelligence, one that is fully consistent with the Big Bang and Darwinian evolution. At this time both views are equally logical and equally beyond proof. However exceptional human experiences and accounts of mystics throughout the ages do suggest that we live in a purposeful Universe. Haisch speculates on what this purpose might be and what that purpose means for our lives.

This is not incompatible with science. Astrophysicist Sir James Jeans wrote that "the universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine" and Sir Arthur Eddington, who proved that Einstein's general relativity was correct, wrote about "science and the unseen world." Cosmologist Sir Fred Hoyle called the Universe "an obvious fix."

Haisch also discusses the popular, but often misrepresented, topic of zero-point energy from the perspective of a multiyear NASA-funded study he led at Lockheed Martin.

"Part of the appeal of this book is that Dr. H. presents his hypothesis as a scientist, conditioned by decades in the halls of science. In particular there is no pulpit pounding insistence on his viewpoint. Rather he discusses topics such as creationism vs. evolution without the emotional upheaval of belief systems.

Of particular interest is his writing on the zero point field. I had been aware of the astounding discovery, where some scientists were able to derive Newton's second law of Physics, F=ma, by considering that inertia was simply the 'drag' encountered by mass in the zero point field. I first read of this in Lynn [McTaggart]Create?'s book the Field. This is astounding because (i) that basic law was thought to be a primary law of the Universe and thus not-derivable, (ii) it made the zero point field a basis of all matter (iii) the scientific community largely ignored this amazing discovery.

What I was not aware of was that Bernard was one of those responsible for this discovery! So if you are interested in the zero point field from someone with the scientific and metaphysical credentials - go no further.

So if you want to put your metaphysical conception of the universe on a more solid scientific basis, and/or have great discussions...get a little God Theory in your life."

-William Arntz, Executive Producer of "What the Bleep Do We Know," October 2007 BLEEPing Herald

      • Review:: 'Rating the God Theory This is an excellent book - the information totally resonates with what I feel inside - that a Creater God was the Intelligent force that started the big bang. I'm not a scientist but it seems they are still puzzled at what started the balls rolling - not a far stretch to figure out there was an Intelligent Consciousness behind it - aka - God! Delivery was also very prompt, as always with Amazon purchases!
      • Review:: 'Provocative and inspirational Bernard Haisch has done a masterful job in making complex subject matter highly accessible to the layperson. He has seamlessly weaved a beautiful, profound and inspirational exploration of cosmology, quantum physics, metaphysics, and theology, drawing upon diverse schools of thought ranging from eastern philosophy to Jewish mysticism. I found this book nothing short of profound, and would highly recommend it to anyone who is open minded, curious, and who believes in G-d, but does not necessarily subscribe to formal religious dogma.
      • Review:: 'The God Theory Excellent book, it reads well and proposes a great Theory,It may change your thinking of a creator.
      • Review:: 'Pardon the pun, but this book IS enlightening This author's new way of looking at light (going beyond the photon to electromagnetism, bio-florescence, and zero point field energy among others)and how the brain might be interpreting that information made me sit up and say, "Wow!" It makes sense that the human brain not only acts as a receiver and processor of information but, considering the plethora of information we're bombarded with daily, it also filters, allowing our consciousness to 'see' that which would be useful to us personally and editing out the rest. For seekers, this is a 'must read'.
      • Review:: 'Heck of a Theory A quick and wonderful read from a man who is walking the path of the mystic without really knowing it I think. The mystic has always sought to remedy the schism of science and spirituality. The author is on this path and does a fantastic job of outlining his belief in science assisting him in his personal journey of understanding Deity. I highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in understanding the true scope of G-d from one man of science perspective.

Eats, Shoots & Leaves- The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation

The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation:
Book by Lynne Truss. Gotham 240 pages Paperback Published 2006-04-11. Description: A bona fide publishing phenomenon, Lynne Truss’s now classic #1 New York Times bestseller Eats, Shoots & Leaves makes its paperback debut after selling over 3 million copies worldwide in hardcover.

We all know the basics of punctuation. Or do we? A look at most neighborhood signage tells a different story. Through sloppy usage and low standards on the Internet, in e-mail, and now text messages, we have made proper punctuation an endangered species.

In Eats, Shoots & Leaves, former editor Truss dares to say, in her delightfully urbane, witty, and very English way, that it is time to look at our commas and semicolons and see them as the wonderful and necessary things they are. This is a book for people who love punctuation and get upset when it is mishandled. From the invention of the question mark in the time of Charlemagne to George Orwell shunning the semicolon, this lively history makes a powerful case for the preservation of a system of printing conventions that is much too subtle to be mucked about with. BACKCOVER: Praise for Lynne Truss and Eats, Shoots & Leaves:

Eats, Shoots & Leaves “makes correct usage so cool that you have to admire Ms. Truss.”
—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Witty, smart, passionate.”
—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books Of 2004: Nonfiction

“Who knew grammar could be so much fun?”
—Newsweek

“Witty and instructive. . . . Truss is an entertaining, well-read scold in a culture that could use more scolding.”
—USA Today “Truss is William Safire crossed with John Cleese’s Basil Fawlty.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“Lynne Truss has done the English-speaking world a huge service.”
—The Christian Science Monitor

“This book changed my life in small, perfect ways like learning how to make better coffee or fold an omelet. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who cares about grammar and a gentle introduction for those who don’t care enough.”
—The Boston Sunday Globe

“Lynne Truss makes [punctuation] a joy to contemplate.”
—Elle

“If Lynne Truss were Roman Catholic I’d nominate her for sainthood.” —Frank [McCourt]Create?, author of Angela’s Ashes

“Truss’s scholarship is impressive and never dry.”
—Edmund Morris, The New York Times Book ReviewDescription: """You don't need to be a grammar nerd to enjoy this one...Who knew grammar could be so much fun?"" -Newsweek We all know the basics of punctuation. • Review:: 'Delightful! I never thought that I'd ever find myself in a quiet, public room, sitting by the fireside after an afternoon of skiing, surrounded by other hotel guests, and suddenly laughing out loud while I read a book about, of all things, punctuation. However, despite the seemingly dull topic, I found this short little gem of a book to be wonderfully written and, at times, absolutely hilarious. Lynne Truss has a sense of humor that would probably enable her to make almost any topic you can think of funny. In this particular case, if you know the English language and you love to read, you'll find "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" to be truly delightful!
      • Review:: 'As delightfull as the joke abot the panda! Eats, Shoots & Leaves is a delightful, light hearted look at the good, the bad and the simply incorrect of English grammar, told in straight forward, funny, personal style. Anyone who cares about written English must read this brief yet detailed discussion of the when, where and why of placing commas, simi-colons and the dreaded colon. Lynn Truss abley demonstrates her knowledge of the subject as well as the language used in discussing it. A small book packed with valuable information on punctuation, Eats, Shoots & Leaves should be on every writer's book shelf.
      • Review:: 'best "grammar" type book out there I have taught English all my professional life and currently teach writing at Miami Dade College (Wolfson Campus). This is the absolutely best book available to made not only punctuation but sentence creating more educationally available to students. It should be a textbook and not most of those other useless things filled with useless pages of exercises that don't do anything to improve students' (writers') ability to proof read their drafts. Eric Selby
      • Review:: 'Passionate about Punctuation "A woman, without her man, is nothing. A woman: without her, man is nothing." ~ pg. 9 It is probably not unusual to feel slightly uncomfortable while reading a book on grammar or punctuation. "How many mistakes have I made?" you may ask yourself. As someone who grew up in a country that called parentheses "brakets" I have reason to feel slightly more at home with some of the British usage. For the most part the book is strangely entertaining. Is it funny? To be honest I laughed three times by page ten and then didn't again until page 63 and 92. So it is humorous in places. I must also say that I'm siding with anyone who hates the Oxford comma. Lynne Truss spends a lot of time explaining its and it's. One third of the book is dedicated to the apostrophe. Which I must say had many good examples. The rest of the book is dedicated to colons, semicolons, question marks, exclamation marks, commas, hyphens, parentheses and quotation marks. "The basic rule is straightforward and logical: when the punctuation relates to the quoted words it goes inside the inverted commas; when it relates to the sentence, it goes outside. Unless, of course, you are in America." ~ pg. 155 My only real complaint is that the publisher did not adapt the entire book for an American audience. Comments are made about the difference in usage, but otherwise you are left to fend for yourself. ~ The Rebecca Review
      • Review:: 'Truss's Trick - Punctuation Humor I usually read escapist fiction. Since I spend my working hours writing factual matter (I'm a technical writer), I almost never read non-fiction, and it would generally be a cold day down in Dantes' neighborhood on which I would voluntarily pick up a book on - of all things - grammar. But, given this book as a gift, I was finessed into actually opening it. What a great surprise! I hooted, I snorted, I laughed involuntarily until people looked at me sideways! This is great stuff! Lynn Truss speaks to everyone that has ever winced at a lunch menu with a "Chefs Special" or "Kids Menu" or "Dilled Carrot's", etc. Though few of us actually spend a great deal of time and energy anguishing over the punctuation faux pas with which public literature is littered, many of us wince when confronted with them. Here is the hero of our wincing Inner Stickler!! (Go Lynn!) This book is filled with good, silly, erudite anecdotes (the STET scene springs vividly to mind! I've been there, too, Lynn!) and hilarious examples. Although it is somewhat of a page-turner, it's made up of very short episodes, and so is easy to put down - though easier to pick up. Not everyone will resonate with this book (just look at some of the reviews). To enjoy it, your Inner Stickler can't be too fussy and rigid to recognize some slightly different points of view that just might be equally valid. Conversely, you have to at least be able to perceive the differences in variously punctuated phrases; if to you "A woman, without her man, is nothing." looks the same as "A woman: without her, man is nothing." you should not bother to pick up the book. It would merely baffle and bore you. For the right reader (and all writer readers, I would think!), this is a hilarious romp amongst the speed bumps and parking lot lines of language. Enjoy!
